Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, often crowded at the ends of the branches. Margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in terminal panicles. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of 4–5 sepals. Corolla of 4–5 petals. Stamens 5(10–12), only 1(2–5) fertile and larger than the sterile ones. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule 1.

Fruit: Drupes resinous with a large compressed seed enclosed in fibers. Seeds with an oily embryo.
